The DeForest Police Department offers numerous
programs in crime prevention such as residential and business
security and crime prevention surveys, Crime Prevention by
Environmental Design, Fraud Prevention, Identity Theft
Prevention, Neighborhood Watch,
SpeedWatch, and other crime prevention programs. We believe
that to prevent crime, we all must do our part to look out for
each other. We also believe that residents must take
responsibility to help prevent crime and loss.
For a
criminal to commit a crime, he/she needs three things. Desire, ability,
and opportunity. We may not be able to stop desire or ability, but we
can prevent opportunity.
Almost
all stolen property crimes in DeForest occur due to opportunities for
the criminal such as unlocked vehicles and garages, valuables left out
in the open, or bikes not secured.
To remove
opportunity, residents should practice the following crime prevention
tips:
Do not keep valuables inside vehicles at night.
Close garage doors during evening hours and lock service
doors.
Install motion detection lights to the front and back of
your residence.
Lock up bikes when at school or when out of sight. Store
inside at night.
